The Crowd: Mothers, daughters show style at fashion show
The causes were deserving. The mothers and their daughters were fashionable. And the tradition was embraced. The 25th annual mother-daughter spring fashion luncheon on behalf of National Charity League, Juniors, Newport Beach chapter, unfolded at the Balboa Bay Club & Resort in major spring style.
Some 450 pretty women, handsome dads and their children turned out like a tornado of fresh air attired in the latest pastel creations heralding the season. NCL, Jrs. president Michelle Yacoel welcomed the crowd.
Chaired by a triad of gals, including Cory Lang, Allison Phillips and one woman who married into a family that gave an entirely new meaning to her name, Truly Boring, the daylong party honored sixth-grade girls and their moms raising important funds for the High Hopes Head Injury Program, Pediatric Cancer Research Foundation (PCRF) and the Harry and Grace Steele Children’s Center.
In the crowd were Kimberly Prado and daughter Caroline, Kelly Stewart with daughter Savannah, Marie Goffman and Gabriella, Susan Beall and Hillary, Lea Beasley and Natalie, Sandi Hanscom and Allison, Jill and Caroline Johnson and Ashlyn and co-chair Boring with daughter Baylor Boring.
Saks Fifth Avenue executive Rachel Jackson-Smith coordinated the spring fashion show featuring both professional Saks models and NCL, Jrs.’ daughters on the runways showing off the latest trends from Catamini, South Coast Plaza.

The 11th annual Scholar Awards Dinner presented by the ARCS Foundation Inc., Orange County chapter, unfolded at UC Irvine’s Arnold and Mabel Beckman Center. ARCS, which stands for Achievement Rewards for College Scientists, recognizes student achievement in the sciences and supports their work with direct financial sponsorship provided by members of the O.C. community, as well as from the national organization. This is hands-on philanthropy in the classic sense. Donors help finance their scholars as if they were their own children. Often, a close bond forms between the young achievers and their mentors.
Overall, the purpose is to advance science in America. In O.C., specifically through the ARCS Chapter at UCI, students at the School of Biological Sciences, the Henry Samueli School of Engineering, the Donald Bren School of Information and Computer Sciences, the School of Physical Sciences and the School of Medicine, were awarded scholarships for advanced research.
Among the student scholars were Ruth Barrett, mentored by donors Richard and France Campbell, Melissa Davis, sponsored by Paul Campbell, Colleen Moody, mentored by Barbara Hamkalo, Nicolas Mangano, supported by ARCS in honor of Joan Torres, Janice Chang also funded by ARCS in honor of Nira Roston and John Reager supported by and Carol Malouf. Many additional recipients were funded by Patricia Beckman representing her late parents through the Arnold and Mabel Beckman Foundation.
The upbeat evening began with a cocktail reception at the Beckman Center followed by a formal presentation of scholars in an amphitheatre classroom. Each scholar was introduced by the dean of his or her department accompanied by a short delivery about their scientific field of study. Dinner was then served in the dining room mixing tables of students and their families, if able to attend, with their donor/mentors, teachers and ARCS members at large.
Among the generous ARCS members with purpose were Sue Alexopoulos and Diana Casey, co-chairs of the scholarship presentation event; Ralph Clayman, Ann Rowe, Peggy and Joe Stemler, Carolyn Boyd, Pat Beckman, William and Sandra Beckman, Cynthia French , Ellen and Jim Lewis and Marion Pickens. The president of the foundation is Joan Torres.

Since its inception in 1958, ARCS has raised and donated $74,825,946 in support of American students pursuing advanced scientific study.
