Community & Clubs: OCC Circle K wins awards
Orange Coast College’s Circle K Club, a collegiate leadership development program sponsored by Kiwanis International, sent 40 members to the California-Nevada-Hawaii Circle K 58th annual Convention in Woodland Hills. The OCC students collected more than 50 individual and club awards and a pair of scholarships.
Alan Chung of Garden Grove was awarded a $2,000 scholarship, and Tina Nguyen, also of Garden Grove, received a $750 scholarship. Chung was also recognized as a Distinguished Vice President of Administration, while Nguyen was honored as a Distinguished Membership Development and Education Chair.
Awards also went to: President Jennifer Que of Garden Grove; Vice President of Service Ryan Pham of Santa Ana; Secretary Lauren Kim of Brea; and Kiwanis-Family Chair Patrick Junpradub of Norwalk. OCC’s Circle K was named a Distinguished Club.
Circle K is the Kiwanis International Service Leadership Program for college and university students with clubs throughout the United States and 17 countries.
Five years ago, one OCC student started to rebuild the campus Circle C Club. The organization now boasts nearly 100 members who have completed more than 6,000 hours of community service during the past 12 months, according to club advisor Jeff Dimsdale.

TRACK AND FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS COMING
In 1981, Frank Anderson, president of the Rotary Club of Newport-Balboa, came to the rescue of the Newport Beach Youth Track and Field Championships. That year, the Rotary stepped up to sponsor this youth activity, when the city’s Parks and Recreation Department lost funding for the annual event.
For the past 31 years the Rotary Club has provided funds, stopwatches, judges and awards for the meet. Dr. Art Walton works closely with Scott Willliamson and his city staff to coordinate the Rotary’s yearly participation.
The track meet will kick off at 3:30 p.m. on April 20 at the Corona del Mar High School track, 2101 Eastbluff Drive, Newport Beach. As many as 300 Newport-Mesa Unified athletes ages 8 to 13 are expected to participate.
In preparation for the championships, the city has hosted a series of clinics for all events including the 50-, 100-, 200-, 400-, 800-, and 1,600-meter runs, softball throw, high jump, long jump and shot put. The first four finishers in each event will be eligible for the Orange County Championship Meet in May.

THIRD ANNUAL LUNAFEST FILM FEST
From 6:15 to 9:30 p.m. on April 21, Soroptimist and ZONTA Clubs of Newport Harbor will co-host a fun evening of 10 short films celebrating the talents and stories of women.
Highlighting the event at St. Mark Presbyterian Church, 2200 San Joaquin Hills Road Newport Beach, will be a VIP Champagne Social with Hollywood’s Alex Rose, a longtime producer for director Garry Marshall, and Martha Coolidge, the first woman to serve as president of the Directors Guild of America.
There will be a buffet dinner, silent auction, raffles and the showing of the 10 short films. Tickets are $50 each, or three for $100, and students with I.D. pay $20. For tickets or more information, contact Sue Haddock at dist2sue@ymail.com or Bonny Schumacher at bschumacher@bloombert.net.
Proceeds will benefit the Breast Cancer Fund and other community and international women’s programs. Thus far, LUNAFEST, which is created and funded by Luna, the women’s nutritional bar, raised more than $456,000 for the Breast Cancer Fund and over $785,000 for other women’s nonprofits.
