Community & Clubs: Weekend Fish Fry time

Share
Daily Pilot

After the baseball or soccer game this weekend, take the family to Lions Park for the 63rd Fish Fry sponsored by the Costa Mesa-Newport Harbor Lions Club. Besides deep-fried cod and fries, there will be hamburgers, hot dogs, apple pie, popcorn, sodas and more.

There will be a baby contest, a variety of music from the main stage and good old family fun carnival rides and games for kids of all ages. Saturday’s activities begin at noon and go until 9 p.m., while Sunday’s activities begin at noon and go until 6:30 p.m. or when all the fish are gone!

Community leaders will be at the event, serving up fish alongside Lions. And with elections Tuesday, you will probably see electoral candidates in attendance as well. Proceeds benefit local and Lions Club charities.

Lions walk to boost research on blindness

The Harbor Mesa Lions team Paws for the Cause will be walking Sunday in the VisionWalk at Cal State Fullerton. The event is an annual fundraiser for the Foundation Fighting Blindness, which has enabled great strides in curing blindness due to retinal degenerative diseases. Since the organization was founded, the foundation has invested almost $400 million in retinal research and the fight to cure blindness. This has led to being on the verge of breakthroughs that will transform the lives of people living with the disease. Harbor Mesa Lions will also be helping with the refreshments and registration, which starts at 9 a.m. The 5K walk begins at 10 a.m. If you would like to support, help or do the walk, call (949) 631-5523. Seniors can learn about accurate Internet information

Computer Friends is a computer club dedicated to helping seniors learn computer basics while enriching their creative efforts with speakers, classes and social functions. Their meeting is at 1 p.m. the second Wednesday of the month at the Newport Beach Central Library, 1000 Avocado Ave.

At the next meeting June 9, the topic will be “How to Identify ACCURATE Health and Safety Information on the Internet.” The speaker will be Jill Golden, a registered dietitian who has been teaching food science and nutrition at Orange Coast College for more than 30 years. While the Internet can be a fast and effective way to access information, Golden will explain how to access information that is accurate, up to date, complete and in-depth, and whether the source is a relevant authority.

The speaker will be followed by Randy Langel, the club’s computer expert, who will answer questions and comment on the latest developments in computer technology and the Internet. The fee is $2 and everyone is welcome. For more information, call Gina Lesley at (949) 646-9169.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY

“The true test of character is not how much we know how to do, but how we behave when we don’t know what to do.”
