Hunter Pence played his part in the San Francisco Giants’ latest championship run, but earlier in the season the outfielder made a play away from the field, buying a beachfront home in Newport Beach for $3.8 million.

The three-story home, designed for indoor-outdoor entertaining, features telescoping glass doors that open the main floor to a brick-lined patio. The 2,500 square feet of living space includes a living room, kitchen with breakfast bar, four bedrooms and 3.25 bathrooms.

Among features is a master suite complete with fireplace, soaking tub and ocean-facing balcony. On the top floor, a rooftop deck offers wide views of the coastline, Catalina Island and the Newport Pier.

On and off the market for about three years, the property most recently listed for sale at $4.295 million. Suzanne Branson of Windermere Real Estate SoCal was the listing agent, according to the Multiple Listing Service.

Pence, 31, is entering the second year of a five-year, $90-million contract extension he signed with the Giants in 2013. The bearded right fielder appeared in all 162 games for the Giants last season, batting .277 with 20 home runs while making his third All-Star team.

The purchase, which closed in late September, marks Pence’s second real estate investment of the year. In January, he purchased a condo at the Millennium Tower in San Francisco from former 49ers quarterback Joe Montana for $1.65 million.

He owns other property in the Houston area.
