Coroner: Student found dead had high BAC level

A college student who drowned in Newport Harbor had a high level of alcohol in his system when he died, toxicology report results released Friday show.

Alan Sun-Long Lin’s post-mortem blood alcohol content ranged from .16% to .19%, according to the Orange County Crime Lab.

In the days soon after he went missing, his family had said that Lin, 22, a UC Riverside student from Irvine, was last seen leaving Rudy’s Pub and Grill on Newport Boulevard on foot early in the morning of Feb. 5.

Eight days later, on Feb. 13, his body was found floating in the Rhine Channel, near the Bluewater Grill restaurant.

At the time, Newport Beach police investigators believed that no foul play was involved. They had found no marks or bruises on Lin’s corpse.

According to an autopsy report from the O.C. Sheriff-Coroner’s office, Lin died by accidental drowning.

The autopsy found no evidence of external or internal trauma, according to the autopsy report.

Lin was on track to graduate this spring with a degree in mechanical engineering. He would have turned 23 on Feb. 26.

His family could not be reached for comment Friday.
