Around Town: Costa Mesa High schedules annual gala

Beat the Drum for the Arts, a gala to benefit Costa Mesa High School, is set for 6 p.m. Sept. 19 at South Coast Plaza’s Garden Terrace.

The event will include presentations, student performances, a silent auction and dancing. Attire is cocktail/semiformal.

Tickets are $75 per person if bought before Sept. 10, or $100 per person at the door. Couples will pay $150 at the door.

Proceeds will benefit Costa Mesa High’s arts and sciences academies and Mandarin language program.

Newport-Mesa appoints two new principals

The Newport-Mesa Unified School District announced the appointments of David Martinez as principal of Early College High School and Michael Sciacca as principal of Ensign Intermediate School.

Both began their new roles Friday.

Martinez formerly was assistant principal at Estancia High School. Sciacca previously was assistant principal at Newport Harbor High School.

“These leaders are bringing with them a passion for excellence and a commitment to our guaranteed and viable curriculum,” district Supt. Fred Navarro said. “Their proven skills and collaborative leadership styles will help move our district forward and enable our students to excel.”

Attorney joins CMHS Foundation

Attorney Jennifer Farrell has joined the board of the Costa Mesa High School Foundation, according to a news release.

Farrell, who specializes in government and regulatory law at Rutan & Tucker in Costa Mesa, is board chairwoman of the Costa Mesa Chamber of Commerce and a member of the Coast Community College District Foundation’s board.

“We are thrilled to have Jennifer join us,” said foundation President Katrina Foley, who also is a Costa Mesa City Council member. “She brings wisdom, experience and great positive energy to our purpose as we introduce very ambitious academy programs to our student curriculum.”
