Man injured by own truck

A Newport Beach man was arrested early Thursday after police said he drunkenly drove his car into a truck stopped at a Costa Mesa business, seriously injuring its driver.

Jeffrey Scott Marshall, 27, was southbound on Placentia Avenue in his Infiniti G35 when he slammed into a Ford F-150 about 12:11 a.m., police said. The Ford’s driver had gotten out and was working to open the business’ gate.

The impact of the crash, just north of 17th Street on Placentia Avenue, sent the truck caroming into its 56-year-old driver from Westminster.

Paramedics took the injured man to Western Medical Center in Santa Ana with a head injury. Officers arrested Marshall on suspicion of driving drunk. He is being held in Orange County Jail in lieu of $100,000 bail. He is scheduled to be in court today.

This is the second serious car crash in Costa Mesa this week.

On Tuesday afternoon, a motorcyclist was hospitalized after he slammed into the front end of a car turning left onto East 17th Street.

Newport resident Joseph Higgins, 21, was riding about 40 mph between cars stopped at a red light, police said. He couldn’t see 66-year-old Kenneth Widlowski turning left in front of him, police said.

Higgins slammed into Widlowski’s car and was taken to Western Medical Center with injuries to his torso, police said.

Police are investigating and said alcohol did not appear to be a factor.
