Bouncers going to pretrial in alleged attack

A pretrial hearing is scheduled for two former Hurricanes Bar & Grill bouncers accused of assaulting a patron.

Ivan Alvarez, 23, of Garden Grove and Jakob Taylor, 22, of Costa Mesa are charged with aggravated assault.

Both defendants pleaded not guilty in July. A hearing will be held Tuesday at West Justice Center in Westminster.

Alvarez faces a sentencing enhancement for allegedly causing great bodily injury.

Alvarez and Taylor confronted Corona resident Trevor Parrington about 11:15 p.m. Nov. 13, according to Orange County Deputy District Attorney Vickie Schneider.

Taylor allegedly punched Parrington, and Alvarez allegedly kicked him in the head while he was on the ground, knocking him unconscious, Schneider said.

By the time police arrived, Hurricanes’ staff had moved Parrington to a nearby parking structure, according to Schneider and a report on the Huntington Beach Police Department’s Facebook page.

Alvarez was arrested that night. Charges were filed against Taylor soon after.

Schneider said Alvarez and Taylor had been identified by eyewitnesses and surveillance video.

Other bouncers may have been involved in the alleged attack, but their identities and the extent of their involvement remained unclear, she said.

The attack appeared to have been unprovoked, Schneider said.

“[Parrington] had been drinking and was asked to leave,” she said. “He was actually pretty cooperative from all reports.”

Alvarez’s attorney, Neal Curatola, and Taylor’s attorney, Joseph Angelo, disputed the police’s and district attorney’s accounts. Angelo said the bouncers were merely trying to restrain the customer after he became violent and refused to leave, and that the video does not show his client punching Parrington.

“I want to see where that is [on the tape], and I don’t see it,” Angelo said.

The two attorneys said both defendants were dismissed from Hurricanes following the incident. The restaurant’s attorney did not return calls seeking comment, but a Hurricanes employee confirmed Wednesday that Alvarez and Taylor no longer worked there.

Parrington filed a lawsuit earlier this year against Alvarez, Taylor and Hurricanes, claiming the bouncers attacked him without provocation and that the restaurant negligently trained and supervised its security guards.

Parrington also claimed that he suffered brain injuries, memory loss, post-traumatic stress syndrome and other afflictions as a result of the alleged assault. He is seeking upward of $25,000 in damages.
