Friends of the Library: Mesa Verde booksale is next weekend
It has been a long time since a booksale has taken place at the Mesa Verde Library. But next weekend you will have the opportunity to make great buys on great books.
The sale at the library, 2969 Mesa Verde Drive, Costa Mesa, will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 8, with regular pricing. Then from noon to 4 p.m. Oct. 9, “Buck-a-Bag” will take place; you can stuff as many books as you can into the bags we provide, all for a dollar per bag. In addition to books, there will be CDs, videos and LPs.

From 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Mesa Verde Library’s Pajama Storytime will host a “Read for the Record” evening for families. Carol Marshall from Read Orange County will read “Llama, Llama Red Pajama” by Anna Dewdney, present a related craft and give each participating family a copy of the book.
This program is part of an international effort to highlight the importance of early childhood education and the value and importance of reading to young children. The event hopes to set a new world record for the most children being read the same book on the same day. Last year, adults across the globe helped to set a new record by reading “The Snowy Day” by Ezra Jack Keats to 2.05 million children.
Mesa Verde Library’s Fall Daisy’s Pre-School Storytimes began on Sept. 27 and will continue until Dec. 13. The half-hour sessions, from 11 to 11:30 a.m. on Tuesdays, are designed for children ages 3 to 7. They will have the opportunity to participate in and listen to a story, song and rhyme. Also, Mother Goose rhymes will be presented in sign language as they are being told.
The library’s Daisy’s Pajama Storytimes are for preschoolers and young school-aged children, ages 3 to 8. These programs are from 7 to 7:30 p.m. on Wednesdays through Dec. 14. Children may come in their pajamas. They will participate in clapping rhymes, stories and songs. And if you wonder, like I did, if Daisy was a new library employee, the answer is no. Daisy is the name of a dog in one of the stories being read.
The Cover-to-Cover Reading Program, sponsored by In-N-Out Burger will begin Oct. 8 and continue until Nov. 19. Parents and children may pick up a reading log at the children’s desk any time between those dates.
READ OC Family Reading Time is at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 13. This program is for families with at least one child younger than 5 and is for parents as well as their children. There will be stories, crafts and a free book for each family.
If you would like to know more about the social networking sites Facebook and Twitter, your chance to learn the basics will happen from 11 a.m. to noon on Oct. 15. For more information on all these programs at the Mesa Verde Library, call (714) 546-5274.
The Costa Mesa Donald Dungan Library, 1855 Park Ave., is trying something different at 2 p.m. on Tuesdays. The first Tuesday of the month is Duplo Day. Families are invited to play duplos with their children. The second Tuesday of the month is Family Game Day, and families are invited to play games together. There will be a Storytime on the third Tuesday. The fourth Tuesday will be Family Movie time. And if there is a fifth Tuesday, it will be a special Craft Day.
Regular storytimes will be held at 11 a.m. Mondays. Bilingual Storytime will be at 2 p.m. Thursdays.
Family Movie Nights will continue at 6:30 p.m. Wednesdays.
The Costa Mesa Book Club will meet at 6:30 p.m. Monday. This month the club is reading “Dracula” by Bram Stoker. Although Stoker did not invent the vampire, the novel’s influence on the popularity of vampires has been largely responsible for many theatrical, film and television interpretations since its publication.
