A missing Huntington Beach man’s kayak was found about a mile offshore in Laguna Beach, according to Newport Beach police.

An off-duty Orange County Sheriff’s Department Harbor Patrol deputy found the kayak, which was in good condition and showed no signs of foul play, said police spokeswoman Kathy Lowe.

After multiple interviews, police were able to positively identify the forest green kayak as that of Marc Cross, 53, who was reported missing by family Aug. 4, police said in a news release Tuesday.

Cross was reported missing after he didn’t return home from kayaking the evening before.

Friends and family members described Cross as an avid waterman and athlete who worked as a seasonal lifeguard for Newport Beach for 11 years before later becoming a schoolteacher.

Anyone with additional information is asked to call Det. Ryan Peters at (949) 644-3779.
