Pet of the Week

Bruno is one of the most unusual breeds — Rhodesian ridgeback mix — to have come to the shelter. Found as a stray, he appears to be about 3 years old.

Rhodesians are large, muscular dogs with distinctive lines of fur along their backs, but the ridge serves no specific function. Originally used in Africa to hunt lions, the modern versions are more likely to enjoy a comfortable home environment. Considered “people” dogs, they are known to be loyal family members and trustworthy with children.

Bruno is healthy, neutered and apparently house-trained. Surprisingly calm and easy to walk at 135 pounds, he also behaves well around other dogs. While ridgebacks are typically athletic — requiring regular exercise — Bruno exhibits a softer side too, liking to nuzzle and be petted.
