Race for the Cure hopes to raise $2 million Sunday to battle breast cancer

Organizers of the Komen Orange County Race for the Cure on Sunday in Newport Beach are optimistic the event will raise more than $2 million to fight breast cancer.

As many as 20,000 people are expected to participate at Fashion Island, said Lisa Wolter, executive director of the Orange County affiliate of Susan G. Komen, a nonprofit founded in 1982 to promote breast-cancer education, research, advocacy, health services and support programs.

This is the 23rd year that the group has presented the event. It threatened to leave Newport Beach next year, saying the city seemed to have misguided priorities when the City Council donated $3,500 to the group instead of a requested $17,000. But it now intends to stay.

“We have gotten more support from the city, and we are happy to say we will be back in Newport Beach next year,” Wolter said.

The day’s events will include 5-kilometer (3.1-mile) run/walks at 7:15 and 9:45 a.m. There also is a 1-mile run/walk for kids at 8 a.m., with pink shoelaces awarded to those who cross the finish line.

At 8:45 a.m., a breast-cancer survivor parade will lead into speeches, a song and the release of doves during a survivor tribute.

Online registration closes at 11:59 p.m. Thursday.

A registration tent at Fashion Island will be open from 3 to 7 p.m. Thursday and Friday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday by the entrance of Macy’s, between Kitson and Tesla. Those who have already registered can pick up their race materials there.

The tent will be open from 6:30 to 10:30 a.m. Sunday at the corner of Santa Cruz and Newport Center drives.

Registration fees are $35 for adults, $25 for breast-cancer survivors, youths ages 6-17 and senior citizens 65 and older, and $5 for children 5 and younger.
