New group aimed at the young and single

Mariners Church in Irvine is launching a weekly gathering for single young adults called The Point, according to a news release.

The Point — which will be held Thursdays beginning Sept. 12 — is part of the church’s efforts to expand its programs for the more youthful members of the community.

“The Point is a new community for young, single adults who aren’t just looking to get married but to build genuine relationships,” Pastor Tim Keller said in the release.

The release said the new program is in response to a growing trend of people choosing to stay single.

“Our goal is for The Point to be a nonthreatening place that anyone in the community can come to connect with God, the church and other unmarried adults in their age group,” Keller said in the release.

The weekly service will feature a group worship with topics geared toward that demographic but still based on the larger Mariners Church message. After the group service, attendees will break into age-specific groups, according to the release.

It also said members of The Point will be encouraged to meet outside the Thursday service primarily to participate in outdoor activities, community outreach and volunteer work.

The program will kick off with an open house from 7 to 9 p.m. Sept. 12 in the Upper Room of the church’s Irvine campus. Food will be served and the Pawnshop Kings will perform.
