Friends of the Libraries: Books and more for sale

It is book sale time again. Really great books appealing to all ages and interests are being offered for sale, as well as 33 rpm records, CDs, VHS tapes, and DVDs.

The event is from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 6, with prices ranging from 50 cents to $1 for most items. Then from noon to 3 p.m. on Sept. 7, it’s “Buck a Bag” day — in other words, $1 for everything you can put in a supplied plastic bag.

The sale will be held in the Community Room at the Costa Mesa Donald Dungan Library, at 1855 Park Ave., Costa Mesa. Remember, your purchases help the Friends of the Costa Mesa Libraries fund reading programs at our Costa Mesa libraries.

Utility Districts Board Candidates to be Introduced

The community is invited to meet and listen to candidates for the Mesa Water District, the Costa Mesa Sanitary District and the Orange County Water District.

The program, sponsored by the Friends of the Library, will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Sept. 18 at the Halecrest Park Swim & Tennis Club, 3107 Killybrook Lane, Costa Mesa. RSVP to bobbyooten@aol.com.

Library Expansion Plans

Six companies have submitted bids to carry out the planned conversion of the Neighborhood Community Center into an expanded library.

The City Council could be asked at its Oct. 7 meeting to award the contract to the selected architectural firm. This is a great opportunity for library lovers to fill the council chambers with their support.

Passport Services

Don’t forget that U.S. passport services are offered at the Donald Dungan Library. The hours have been scheduled so that those who work will find a time to use the services.

On Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, the hours are 3 to 7 p.m., on a walk-in basis. On Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., appointments are required.

At the Donald Dungan Library

The summer reading programs are over at our three libraries, but activity continues.

Are you interested in playing a tropical instrument from Trinidad? Go to the steel drum workshop at the Dungan Library from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday. Guest instructor Pauline Lay who will show you how to play and let you play too.

Bilingual Digital Storytime will be held at 3 p.m. that day.

Children and their families are welcome to visit one of the Duplo tables set up in the lobby from 2 and 6 p.m. Tuesdays.

On Tuesday and Sept. 9 at 6:30 p.m., films from the 1970s will be shown and discussed. On Thursday and Sept. 11, family films will be shown at 4 p.m. Call the library at (949) 646-8845 for titles.

Join Family Storytime from 7 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday and Sept. 10 for stories, finger plays, songs, crafts and more. Children of all ages and their families are invited, and no registration is required. Children are welcome to attend in their pajamas and bring their favorite stuffed toy.

At the Mesa Verde Library

From 2 to 3 p.m. Saturday, children ages 5 and older can practice reading to specially trained therapy dogs. Sessions are one-on-one and between five and 10 minutes long. Parents can help with children who aren’t reading yet. For more information, call the library at (714) 546-5274.

On Tuesday and Sept. 9, Preschool Storytime will be held at 11 a.m. with Preschool Craftivity following at 11:30 a.m.

At the Costa Mesa Technology Library

From 4 to 5 p.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, meet with library volunteers to learn basic computer skills, navigate the Internet, create and use email accounts, print documents and images and more. Sign up for a one-on-one session by calling (949) 515-3970 or visiting. Walk-ins are welcome.
