Pet of the Week

In December, a dachshund named Winnie (think Winnie the Pooh) didn’t let his size matter when protecting his homeless master during an attack, even though it left him with a broken jaw.

People responded, sending cards and accompanying notes and prayers, along with donations, and Community Animal Network was able to help the heroic little dog.

Winnie underwent exams and x-rays, jaw surgery ($1,236) and a 10-day hospitalization. She needed medications, canned food, a new sweater, a harness and a leash.

Other procedures followed in January with the removal of the mesh and metal plate, dental X-rays and extractions. And his teeth were cleaned.

A second procedure was performed to correct his “cherry eyes” ($775), and more follow-up exams and X-rays were provided.

And it didn’t all stop there. A Daily Pilot reader went so far as to pay for a three-night stay at a Motel 6 for Winnie and his homeless master during the holidays.

Community Animal Network’s experience with the homeless population and their dogs has left it wanting to do more for the pets of the homeless.
