Community & Clubs: Lions clubs assist in planting trees
Members of the Harbor Mesa Lions and the Costa Mesa Newport Harbor Lions clubs recently planted 10 trees in Lions and Fairview parks .
The project is a part of the International President’s world-wide tree planting project. So far, almost three million trees have been planted in various countries. District Governor Ken Sherwood has pledged one that 1,000 new trees will be planted in cities from Rancho Cucamonga to San Clemente.
Harbor Mesa President Carol Proctor has arranged plantings in Costa Mesa and Fountain Valley so far and is working on other areas for plantings.
“Trees are important for our environment,” she stated, “We can’t survive without them. and this is just one of the many projects Lions are involved in to make the world a better place.”

Newport Soroptimists Seek Women’s Opportunity Awards Applicants
Women who serve as the primary wage earners for their families and seek to improve their lives with the help of additional education and training can apply for the Women’s Opportunity Award, a major service project of Soroptimist International of Newport Harbor Area.
Applicants will be considered for a $1,000-award which can be used for tuition, books, child care, transportation or any other related expense. The Newport Club winner will then be considered for $3,000 to $5,000 at the regional level, where one recipient will receive $5,000. The program culminates each year with three $10,000 finalist awards from Soroptimist International of the Americas.
This program was created to help women improve their ability to provide for their families. Since the program’s inception in 1972, an estimated $15 million has been disbursed and about 25,000 women have been assisted.

Newport Sunrise Rotary supports Hoag Blood Drive
Janna Mazzarese of the Hoag Blood Donor Services was at a recent meeting of the Rotary Club of Newport Beach Sunrise to focus on the Club’s blood drive, from Tuesday through Friday at the Hoag Health Center, 510 Superior Ave., Newport Beach.
Blood usage has increased and they desperately need blood. You can sign up by email at donateblood@hoag.com. Bring your photo I.D., a list of medications you are taking and no tattoos within the last 12 months.
