Reel Critics: ‘Breaking’ bad, part 2

Share

“The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2” could also be titled “The Glampires Strike Back,” as three teen heartthrobs finally end their endless saga. Forever. One hopes.

The “Twilight” films started a new age of beautifully groomed, soft spoken Undead. Edward (Robert Pattinson) and Bella (Kristen Stewart) fell in love in high school, no doubt because their blank gaze was reflected in the other’s eyes. Although their love seemed doomed — he’s a dull vampire, she’s a dull mortal — together they make a fortune. And a baby!

After her hubby’s epic love bite at the end of “Part 1,” immortality seems to agree with Bella. She and Edward live in a fabulous house with other fabulous vampires. It’s like a photo spread in Vogue.

Baby girl Renesmee is the catalyst for a silly plot to kill them all, led by the evil Aro (Michael Sheen), who dresses like the pope crossed with Michael Jackson. Sheen is eminently watchable.

Vampires of the world unite, sporting fabulous eye makeup and special powers that make for a fun diversion. Their epic battle is truly epic, including the epic removal of heads.

And let us not forget poor love-starved Jacob: man-child, werewolf and sworn protector of Bella and her daughter. Taylor Lautner’s acting range is matched only by Pattinson and Stewart, and any sign of stress leads to the immediate removal of his shirt.

Epic, indeed.
