Chess Tournament

The 36th annual Staser Fall Scholastic Chess Tournament for K-12 students is from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Orange County Great Park in Irvine. ‘I Found It in a Book’

Paul Tracey will play the song flute, orchestral flute, piccolo, African mbira, kalimba and guitar in a concert for families where books will play a part. The concert is at 11 a.m. in the Friends Meeting Room at the Newport Beach Central Library, 1000 Avocado Ave. Admission is free, but space is limited.

Culinary Competition

Gourmet food truck chefs will compete against one another by using seasonal ingredients, which they will shop for at the SoCo Certified Farmers Market. The competition will start at noon at the South Coast Collection, 3315 Hyland Ave., Costa Mesa. A food drive to collect non-perishable foods, canned items and dry goods will also take place to benefit Someone Cares Soup Kitchen.

‘A Global Strings Journey’

The Pacific Symphony Santiago Strings will play a free concert of musical pieces from Norway, Spain, Japan and Africa at 3 p.m. at the CU Center, Concordia University, 1530 Concordia West, Irvine.

Jewish Movie Night

OCC Fall Choral-Vocal

Showcase

The Orange Coast College Chamber Singers and Chorale perform at 8 p.m. in OCC’s Robert B. Moore Theatre. Guest artists, pianist Janelle Tag and trumpeter Alfred Lang, will join the singers and the chorale in performing “Song of the Open Road,” by Dello Joio. Alternative Christmas Market

St. Mark’s 28th annual Alternative Christmas Market is from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall at St. Mark Presbyterian Church, 2200 San Joaquin Hills Road, Newport Beach. Admission and parking are free. Worship service will continue as usual at 9:30 a.m. The project is underwritten by St. Mark’s Peace and Justice Commission, which means that all funds raised go to the participating charities.

Sunday Musicale

Celebration
