Friends of the Library: Check out the Mesa Verde bookstore
Dedicated members of Friends of the Costa Mesa Libraries and volunteers at the Mesa Verde bookstore descended on Mesa Verde Library earlier this month to assist at a two-day used-book sale, one of which was a buck-a-bag sale day.
A customer was so pleased with this sale that his purchase of children’s books totaled $20!
The Friends of the Costa Mesa Libraries’ bookstore at the Mesa Verde Library, which is now more than 5 years old, is located behind the library in the corner of the parking lot. Regular hours are 1 to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday. The Mesa Verde Library is at 2969 Mesa Verde Drive East, Costa Mesa.
Carts outside the bookstore door have items available Tuesdays through Fridays for an affordable 25 cents each; buck-a-bag days for outside-cart items are Saturdays and Sundays. Book carts have been placed near the library’s front door for shoppers, holding books for adults and children at regular bookstore prices, mostly between 50 cents and $1. Currently, special books have been set aside in the store for those cooks and crafters who plan ahead for the holidays.
The bookstore is manned by volunteers who give time and money to the libraries, and thus to the Costa Mesa community, on a weekly basis. They are some of the store’s best customers! Costa Mesa residents and others are generous in donating used books, CDs, DVDs, and videos to the bookstore.
The local book club meets in the bookstore each third Monday.
“Wuthering Heights” by Emily Bronte is the selection for November. The book club is a great way to meet new people, discuss books, authors, and characters. It’s also a good time to peruse books for purchase at your leisure. For more information on the bookstore, call (714) 438-0517.
Next to Costa Mesa’s libraries, the two library bookstores are the best deal in town!
READ-OC will present a Family Reading Time for families with at least one child younger than 5 at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 10 at the Mesa Verde Library. This program is for parents as well as their children.
There will be stories, crafts and a free book for each family.

At the Donald Dungan Library
The last two events this year to celebrate Halloween at the Costa Mesa Donald Dungan Library will be the Halloween-themed arts and crafts table for teens and adults on Friday (until 4 p.m.) and the Halloween Dress-up Storytime for toddlers and preschoolers at 11 a.m. Monday.
As a special treat children can have their faces painted. This free event is sponsored by the Friends of the Costa Mesa Libraries.
November is very busy at the Dungan Branch with events for children and adults. Starting Tuesday and continuing until Nov. 21, the library will hold a Recipe Raffle.
Enter the raffle by writing your favorite recipe or a description of your favorite cookbook. You will get a chance to win a $20 gift certificate to Mimi’s. If you like, the library staff will publish the recipes in the library’s own newsletter.
Duplo Day, which features large-shaped Lego’s, will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday. Little children, toddlers and preschoolers are welcome to play Duplo’s with their parents.
At 2 p.m. Thursday, there will be a Parent Workshop held by Orange County READ. Learn about educational strategies for preschoolers. Parents and young children are welcome to attend the workshop. There will be crafts, playtime and snacks.
At 6:30 p.m. Nov. 7, the regular Book Club at the library will feature the nonfiction book “The Last American Man” by Elizabeth Gilbert.
Special events for children include Bilingual Storytime at 2 p.m. Nov. 10.
Daisy Preschool Storytime will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday and Nov. 8; Daisy Pajama Storytime will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday and Nov. 9.
“Legos for all,” a drop-in Legos session, will be at 3 p.m Nov. 9.
