Meet the Researcher

The Roman Reed Foundation presents “An Evening with Dr.. Hans Keirstead,” a celebration of the UC Irvine researcher’s groundbreaking work into stem cell treatment for spinal chord injuries. The event is at the Sue & Bill Gross Stem Cell Research Center at UCI. Dr. Keirstead will give a lecture at 7:15 p.m., following a VIP reception at 5:30 p.m. and a public reception at 6:30 p.m. Tickets cost $150 for the VIP reception, the lecture and a tour of the laboratory, and $50 for the public reception, lecture and lab tour. Meet the Artist

The Pacific Art Foundation hosts its annual Meet the Artist event, featuring the works of eight female artists. A VIP cocktail reception at 6 p.m. will feature a presentation by Peter Frank, a consultant curator at the Riverside Art Museum who blogs about art for the Huffington Post. The event is at the Pacific Club, 4110 MacArthur Blvd., Newport Beach. The main exhibition will be opened for general admission at 7 p.m. Tickets cost $100 for admission to the cocktail and the exhibition and $75 for the exhibition only. Under the Stars

Leslie Helliwell, the naturalist at the Environmental Nature Center, 1601 16th St., Newport Beach will lead a one-hour session in helping people identify the stars. China Expert

Greg Autry, a business professor at UC Irvine and author of “Death by China,” will be the guest speaker at the October meeting of the Newport Harbor Republican Women. Island Bash

The second annual “Monster Bash” fall concert, hosted by the Marine Avenue Business Improvement District, is from 5 to 7 p.m. in the 200 block of Marine Avenue on Balboa Island. The free event features live Swing music and a Halloween costume contest. Local businesses will stay open longer than usual and will offer deals.

Advance Screening of

‘Anonymous’

The Exchange Club of Newport Harbor screens the new movie “Anonymous” on the eve of its general release as the main feature of the 21st annual Movie Screening benefit, one of the service club’s main fundraisers of the year. Proceeds benefit the Orange County Child Abuse Prevention Center and other youth programs in O.C. The evening will begin with a 5:30 p.m. food festival, followed by the movie screening at the Lido Theatre, 3459 Via Lido, Newport Beach. Reaching Out to the Hungry

Le Pain Quotidien, a new café and bakery at Fashion Island, will hose a benefit to help fight childhood hunger from 5 to 8 p.m. at its location in the shopping center’s Pacific Court. Tickets cost $40 and can be bought by calling Judy Walker at (949) 481-7792 or emailing her at jwalker@strength.org. All of the proceeds go to the local chapter of the nonprofit Share Our Strength.

Ernest Marquez

Ernest Marquez, author of “Noir Afloat: Tony Cornero and the Notorious Gambling Ships of Southern California,” will give a talk about his book and sign copies in the Steele Model Pavilion at the Newport Harbor Nautical Museum, 600 E. Bay Ave. on the Balboa Peninsula. The event is at 7 p.m. Museum members get in free for the event, non-members pay $10 and students pay $5 with an I.D.

The Stepkids
