A new season means a host of new stage productions — professional, community and collegiate — on local stages, beginning Friday with the Costa Mesa Playhouse.

David Auburn’s mathematics-centered drama “Proof” focuses on the brilliant daughter of an equally accomplished, now deceased, man whose madness may be inherited.

The play runs at 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, and 2 p.m. Sundays through Sept. 30 at 661 Hamilton St. For more information, call (949) 650-5269 or visit https://www.costamesaplayhouse.org.

The Newport Theatre Arts Center, 2501 Cliff Drive, Newport Beach, swings back into action Sept. 21 with “Art,” Yasmina Reza’s 1998 Tony Award winner as best Broadway play. Michael Ross directs the biting comedy about three friends and their contrasting views on a confusing piece of artwork.

The show runs at 8 p.m. Thursdays through Saturdays and 2 p.m. Sundays through Oct. 21. For more information, call (949) 631-0288 or visit https://www.ntaconline.com.

The Segerstrom Center for the Arts swings into action Oct. 9 with “Stomp,” a brief romp by a troupe of musicians who use everything but the kitchen sink for their instruments — matchboxes, wooden poles, brooms, garbage cans, cigarette lighters, hubcaps — to make their music.

The show runs at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, 2 p.m. Saturday, and 1 and 6:30 p.m. Sunday through Oct. 14. For more information, call (714) 556-2787 or visit https://www.scfta.org.
