Friends of the Libraries: Don’t miss upcoming book sale
Everybody loves a book sale, and there will be one at the Costa Mesa Donald Dungan Library on July 14 and 15.
On July 14, the action will go from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., with most books priced from 50 cents to $1. On July 15, the sale will continue from noon till 3 p.m. with books priced at $1 per bag of books.
Be there and take advantage of the deals on books of all kinds.

Volunteers Needed
Your Friends of the Costa Mesa Libraries, which provides more than $50,000 a year for our three branches of the Orange County Public Libraries system through its bookstores, passport service and photos and membership dues and donations, needs of volunteers to serve on its board.
If you would be interested in volunteering on the author/program committee, or as a treasurer, a web administrator, a historian, book sale manager or several other positions, please leave a message at (714) 438-0517 or send an e-mail to friendscmlibraries@att.net.

At the Mesa Verde Library
The Summer Reading programs at the Mesa Verde Library for the next two weeks will be held outside the library on the grass.
The first session, “Flights of Fantasy Story Theater,” will take place at 1 p.m. Tuesday, bringing folk tales and fables to life in a colorful display of masks, props and costumes.
Performers Lorrie Oshatz and Theresa Amy have created a unique style of Vaudeville storytelling that enables children and parents to celebrate the humor and wisdom inherent in multi-cultural literature. All ages are welcome.
When “Wild Wonders” arrives at 1 p.m. July 10, children and their parents will have the opportunity to meet some extraordinary animals and learn how many creatures from our dreams have real jobs in nature.
You will see a binturong, an armadillo, a gliding phalange and more! All are welcome to this free program at the library, 2969 Mesa Verde Drive East, Costa Mesa. Call (714) 546-5274 for more information.

At the Donald Dungan Library
Visit the library at 11 a.m. Monday to hear music from around the world. For this segment of the Summer Reading Program, musician Marcus Miller will play drums and entertain, conveying valuable lessons about our history, life, music and culture.
Then, at 11 a.m. July 9, Ken Frawley will engage and involve his audience with his program, “Dreaming About Animals” with music and stories. This program will be held outside on the grass. These programs are free and everyone is welcome.

Book Discussion Groups
The Costa Mesa Book Club will meet at 6:30 p.m. Monday in the Costa Mesa Donald Dungan Library’s community room. This month’s book selection is “Breakfast at Tiffany’s,” the novella by Truman Capote, published in 1958.
This book club is free to attend and new members are welcome. Books are available at the check-out desk for the month leading up to the book club.
The Friends of the Costa Mesa Libraries Book Club meets the third Monday of the month at the Friends’ bookstore behind the Mesa Verde Library. The next book choice is “The Girl with No Shadow” by Joanne Harris. Call (714) 438-0517 for more information.
A friend showed me an ad for a class titled, “The Art of Reading.” I was a bit surprised that most of the lecture titles were topics that might be covered while discussing a book with friends — or with members of a book club.
It also occurred to me that if you were not a very eager reader, some enthusiasm might “rub off” from others in such a group. But if joining a group is not your “thing,” just take advantage of the broad range of subject material in your library, skip from fiction to nonfiction, subject to subject, author to author until you find something that makes you want to read more.
Well, just a thought! I’m going to “slip into” an Elizabeth George mystery.
