Retired Teachers’ Meeting

The Newport-Mesa Federation of Teachers-Retired chapter will hold its winter general meeting and luncheon from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., at Mimi’s Cafe, 1835 Newport Blvd., Costa Mesa. New members are welcome.

Six Members, Five Minutes Each

Six members of the Corona del Mar Chamber of Commerce will each give a five-minute presentation about their business during a chamber luncheon at noon at the Five Crowns, 3801 E. What’s Cookin’

Chef Cathy Pavlos, of Lucca Café in Irvine, will give a cooking demonstration at 7 p.m. in the Friends Room at the Newport Beach Public Library’s Central branch, 1000 Avocado Ave. The event is part of the library’s What’s Cooking at the Library program. Grand Opening

The new Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market, at Harbor Boulevard and Gisler Avenue in Costa Mesa, will open for its first day of business at 10 a.m.

‘Crime Trends Targeting Seniors’

Andi Querry, a crime prevention specialist with the Newport Beach Police Department, will be about “Crime trends targeting seniors,” during the February meeting of the Daughters of the American Revolution, which starts at 11 a.m. at Liberty Baptist Church, 1000 Bison St.

Geena Davis and Co.

Actress Geena Davis, California Secretary of State Debra Bowen, Rep. Linda Sanchez, state Senate Majority Leader Ellen Corbett, Orange County Sheriff Sandra Hutchens and Newport Beach Mayor Nancy Gardner will speak in support of the California Commission on the Status of Women at a reception in Newport Beach. ‘The New Hollywood’

The Newport Beach Public Library Foundation presents “The New Hollywood with Robert Kline.” Kline, a producer, director and ex-studio head, will talk about this year’s Oscar nominations. Grand Opening Party

‘Whither Japan’

The Newport Beach Sister City Assn. presents “Whither Japan,” a lecture about Japan’s social, demographic , economic and political future by Stephen M. Harner, a Newport Beach, Tokyo and Shanghai resident who now blogs about Japan. During the 1980s and 90s, Harner worked in Japan for the U.S. State Department, Citibank and Merrill Lynch. Virtuoso Violinist in Concert

The Pacific Symphony presents a concert with Israeli violinist Vadim Gluzman, who will perform Tchaikovsky’s “Violin Concerto” on a Stradivarius made in 1680. The concert, which will be performed at 8 p.m. from Thursday through Saturday in the Renee and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall, 600 Town Center Drive in Costa Mesa, will feature the world-premiere of composer Michael Daugherty’s “The Gospel According to Sister Aimee,” which will be performed by renowned organist Paul Jacobs. ‘I’m a Frayed Knot’

An opening reception for the “I’m a Frayed Knot” exhibition will take place from 6 to 10 p.m. at Orange Coast College’s Frank M. Doyle Arts Pavilion. The exhibit will run through march 17 in the Pavilion, which is open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, and from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays.
