Community & Clubs: Aussies experience Costa Mesa in exchange visit
The Kiwanis Club of Costa Mesa hosted a lunch on Jan. 12 to honor this years’ Australian exchange students from Hoppers Crossing Secondary College near Melbourne in the state of Victoria.
This is the fourth year of Kiwanis of Costa Mesa’s involvement with this program, which also includes visits to Australia by students from Estancia High School. The seven students from Australia stayed with host families in Costa Mesa for two weeks. They attended classes at Estancia High and visited many local venues throughout Orange County.
Charlie Markel, this years’ president of the Kiwanis of Costa Mesa, presented the Australian exchange students with a certificate of appreciation for the presentation that they made to the club about their school and Hoppers Crossing. Kiwanis of Costa Mesa also supports the Estancia Exchange Students who will voyage to Australia this summer.

Why did you join Lions?
In the club’s newsletter, Costa Mesa Newport-Harbor Lions Club President Carol Harper asked members, “Why did you become a Lion?”
Lion Carol Ann Van Holt asked me to join several years before I could commit due to City Council meetings on Monday nights. When those meetings were moved to Tuesdays, she invited me to join again.
At that point in my life, I felt I would be better able to volunteer my time, personal income and energy to a great service organization. In doing so, I became a dedicated Lion.
Harper stated: “Webster’s dictionary defines a volunteer as one who enters into or offers their service of their own will. For an individual to want to become a volunteer, the desire to give back without compensation must already be realized.
“Giving individuals make a happy and harmonious organization and that, in turn, leads to a better community and a healthier society. The essence of a community reflects the individuals in it. Likewise, the essence of Lions is what the members individually and collectively bring to the organization.”
