BOYS’ TENNIS

Sage Hill 14,

Calvary Chapel 4

NEWPORT BEACH — Sage Hill won 11 of the first 12 sets, before inserting several reserves in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division IV playoffs Thursday at the Balboa Bay Club Racquet Club.

The Lightning (15-7) advance to Saturday’s second round against either Gahr or Santa Ynez.

Sage Hill 14, Calvary Chapel 4

Singles – Koeberle (SH) def. Grosek, 6-0, def. Nguyen, 6-0, Wise (SH) lost to Dalbey, 4-6; Wang (SH) won, 6-1, lost, 1-6, Re (SH) lost, 2-6; Cuirit (SH) won, 7-5, Astorino (SH) won, 6-1, 4-6.

Doubles – Kurzweil-Manolakas (SH) def. Pham-Balbey, 6-0, def. McDonald-McCurinin, 6-2, Flayngor-Emiaiz (SH) def. Nguyen-Wadle, 6-0; Yun-Batten (SH) won, 6-0, 6-0, Marshack-Whitaker (SH) won, 6-0; Berchtold-Apramian (SH) won, 6-0, 6-0, Rapport-Stomber (SH) won, 6-2.

Sunny Hills 1

CORONA DEL MAR — Ryan Peyton and Shane Corber swept at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, respectively, in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division I playoffs Thursday at CdM.

Alex Murray and Joel Ishii won, 6-3, 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3 doubles for hte Sea Kings, who advance to Saturday’s second round against either Marina or Mira Costa.

BASEBALL

Sage Hill 9, St. Margaret’s 8

NEWPORT COAST — Mo Kreitenberg hit a walk-off RBI single to cap a four-run seventh inning, leading the Lightning to a share of the Academy League title Thursday.

AJ Wolfson belted a three-run home run to tie the game, 8-8, with one out in the seventh to help Sage Hill (15-4, 12-3 in league) to a co-championship with Oxford Academy.

After Wolfson’s homer, Chris Griffin singled. Griffin then stole second before Kreitenberg drove him in.

Lightning reliever Allen Brown struck out six and allowed two runs in the final four innings. Kreitenberg went two for four with two RBIs. Griffin went two for four with an RBI and Dusty Orrantia was two for two with an RBI.

Academy League

Laguna Beach 2

COSTA MESA — Tyler Peterson scored on a balk in the bottom of the eighth inning with two outs to lift the Mustangs to the Orange Coast League win Thursday.

Peterson also struck out five, allowing seven hits and two runs in seven innings for Costa Mesa (20-6, 11-1 in league), the Orange Coast League champion.

Ryan Boulger was two for four for the Mustangs, who await CIF playoff pairings that will be released Monday at noon.

SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO — Senior starter Steven Manning threw his first complete-game shutout of the season, striking out eight and allowing five hits in the Sea Kings’ Pacific Coast League finale Thursday.

Manning, who walked one batter, improved to 5-3.

CdM (15-10, 11-4 in league) claimed second place in league.

Beau Attyah singled and drove in two runs with two outs in the fifth inning.

Newport Harbor 2

FOUNTAIN VALLEY — Junior Blake Davey went one for two with two runs batted in for the Sailors in a Sunset League finale Thursday.

Newport Harbor was to trying to sweep Fountain Valley and possibly place fourth in league. The Sailors finished 9-17, 5-10 in league.

FOUNTAIN VALLEY — Alex Bauer had an RBI single for the Sailors in the Academy League game Thursday.

Karina Veit also had a single and scored on Bauer’s single for Newport Harbor (6-19, 0-10 in league), which lost by mercy rule in five innings in its final game of the season.
